‘Moire' (pronounced mwar or mwar -ay) is a French word and comes from a mathematical term meaning ‘a patterned effect’ or ‘water washing over fabric’. The name was chosen originally because of the hand dye process that we used, I thought it was clever as it did sound like 'moi' which is french for ME!
Careful planning has gone into the design and shape of every garment. When sampled, the same garment that is tried on a regular size model must also fit a plus size model before it is approved. Selling in a retail store and dressing thousands of different bodies over the past eight years meant that I could really pay attention to 'what women want'. It is truelly evident that busts, arms midriffs, thighs and bottoms are the most common areas that we all want to hide or even accentuate. So I am considering these areas as a crucial part of the design process. HEY obviously we are all unique in beauty, shape and lifestyle but that hasn't detered me from really trying to cater for 'every-body.'
Moire was launched six years ago on the back of label venetia elaine and it's founder Janis Robertson. I was working for Janis at that time. Janis and I really needed something to layer under her clothes for warmth. It was also used for women who were pregnant to fit them into her garments as well.
The first ever design was a re-invented version of a nightdress that I had, but it was in this terrible polyester fabric..however I still wore it every where.. 'and I mean everywhere!'
I was amazed at how much I got around in this nightdress and no-one even noticed.
I wore it to lunch, dinner to the beach and to bed..it was comfortable practical and it looked good. I even wore it when I was pregnant! Although it did not breathe very well and I ended up throwing it away.
Much to my excitement Janis found some cotton stretch fabric and remade it for me. That was our first ever multi- functional piece and it is still in the range today!
Moire followed along the theme of venetia elaine’s worn look and hand dyed muted colors, today Moiré has found its own footing in the fashion/lifestyle world and is truelly an amazing concept for clothing, the fact that you can enjoy the same range in different colors, and still get your favourite pieces.. year after year is a bonus too!
I made Moiré as I discovered missing pieces in my wardrobe that I just couldn't find. They had to be breathable, multifunctional go with everything and be in-expensive. I realise that not everyone is like me, but I do have an eye for 'clever cuts' which comes from years of listening to people and travelling and selling to shops world wide. Clothing changes and dates but moire stays the same. I really made moire for YOU because I know how you think..YOU WANT TO LOOK GOOD, BE COMFORTABLE AND NOT HAVE TO THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO WEAR..RIGHT?
In the ‘everybody’ campaign, I didn’t use stereo type models, I used my beautiful friends Kay Viv Natalie, Kristy and Sylvia who are all completely different in age build, height etc and have very different lifestyles.
They do have one thing in common though..they just love Moire and what it does for them, I know it can do the same for you.
